Transport of Dangerous Goods Symbols
Downloads > Hazard Classification Symbols

Please note: The hazardous products act which includes labels and symbols for transportation are in the process of continuous review.  The sheets and images on our web site may not be completely up todate.  The downloadable images are available for your use but for complete information see the government of Canada Web site.  We are not removing dated symbols as many are still in use.

The hazard of dangerous goods is indicated either by it’s class or it’s class and division. A large placard is used as an identifier on each side any container or vehicle being used for transport. A primary hazard class placard must have the hazard class or division number displayed in the lower corner of the placard. No hazard class or division number may be displayed on a placard representing the secondary hazard of a material. With the exception of Class 7 and the OXYGEN placard text indicating the hazard is not required.

Labels are used as identifiers on all small containers / packages being used to ship hazardous materials. They are smaller versions of placards with either the same or similar designs. Labels may have symbols which indicating the packing group or division rather than the class.

Shipping documents are required which give the details of the materials being shipped along with their hazard class or their hazard class and division number for each type of material in the shipment.

The following chart indicates labels which can be downloaded for printing. To download and save an image, click on the appropriate image in the chart. A new window will appear with the symbol. Right click and use "Save Picture As" to save the image.
