Most people think that the use of asbestos was outlawed. This
never happened in Canada or the United States because there were a
series of accidents due to material failure when adequate substitutes
for asbestos could not be found.Your home and workplace probably have
many items containing asbestos, however most people cannot tell if it is
present without testing.
Some areas where asbestos is
still used include:
-
high temperature
industrial and household items
-
building and equipment
insulation
-
some pipe and duct
insulation
-
floor coverings
-
industrial stoves and
furnaces
-
patching and spackling
compounds
-
some roofing materials
-
some wall and ceiling
panels
-
brake pads and lining for
vehicles and electrical motor brakes
-
protective clothing
including some gloves
-
in high-temperature
laboratory equipment
-
high temperature wiring
Asbestos-containing materials deteriorate or wear over time.
This can result in a coating of asbestos fibers and dust on the material
and surrounding areas. The most hazardous fibers are small and
light and will stay airborne for hours spreading throughout the work
area. It is important that when working with asbestos dust and
fibers that they always be contained and prevented from spreading.
